Muddy Waters

Since opening its doors at 521 Valencia Street in 1993, Muddy Waters Cafe has been a beloved cornerstone of the Mission District, thanks to the vision and dedication of its original owner, Hisham Massarweh and his wife. For over 30 years, they created a welcoming space that became a true neighborhood fixture, known for its strong coffee, vibrant atmosphere, and deep community roots.

Now, as we prepare to reopen this August 1, we are honored to continue the Muddy Waters legacy. We have chosen to keep the name as a tribute to Hisham and his family’s remarkable contributions, and we are committed to carrying their spirit forward while embracing a new era in hospitality. We will be adding more organic items to the menu and working to preserve the unique character that has made Muddy Waters so special.

The Mission is facing challenging times, but we invite all our patrons—old friends and new—to join us for this exciting new chapter. Please come celebrate with us, salute the legacy, and help us extend the story of Muddy Waters Cafe into the future.
